Being an actor isn’t just about memorizing a few lines and making boatloads of money. For actor Mark Wahlberg it meant years of devotion and forking over big bucks to perfect his new role in The Fighter. According to his interview with magazine Sports Illustrated, Wahlberg actually finished the movie by spending far more than he made.

Wahlberg told the magazine he spent $500,000 more than his paycheck for the film. That money went towards paying the best trainers in the world help him become a believable boxer. He told Sports Illustrated: “There are many, many boxing movies, and I love most of them. But I knew that the thing that would set us apart was if the fights looked more real, and I looked more like a boxer than anyone else who’s done it in the past. I spent more money paying my trainers and having them travel with me than I got paid, by a good half a million dollars.”

It may seem silly for the actor to invest so much into his part, but some in Hollywood believe it will pay off. He was nominated for Best Actor for a Golden Globe earlier this week. And he’s also getting Oscar buzz for his performance. That may prove that Wahlberg’s gamble was a winning move.
