Being an actor isn’t just about memorizing a few lines and making boatloads of money. For actor Mark Wahlberg it meant years of devotion and forking over big bucks to perfect his new role in The Fighter. According to his interview with magazine Sports Illustrated, Wahlberg actually finished the movie by spending far more than he made.

Wahlberg told the magazine he spent $500,000 more than his paycheck for the film. That money went towards paying the best trainers in the world help him become a believable boxer. He told Sports Illustrated: “There are many, many boxing movies, and I love most of them. But I knew that the thing that would set us apart was if the fights looked more real, and I looked more like a boxer than anyone else who’s done it in the past. I spent more money paying my trainers and having them travel with me than I got paid, by a good half a million dollars.”

It may seem silly for the actor to invest so much into his part, but some in Hollywood believe it will pay off. He was Read full post…

Tax certainty for trusts is good news for business

The federal government’s review into the taxation of trusts is the most significant attempt at trust tax reform in the last decade, according to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

“A review into the taxation of trusts is a courageous and important move by the federal government,” said the Institute’s Tax Counsel, Yasser El-Ansary, following the Assistant Treasurer’s announcement today.

The Institute called for a review into the taxation of trusts in its January 2010 pre-budget submission, and the report into Australia’s Future Tax System made the same recommendation in May 2010.

“The taxation of trusts is a highly complex area of the law, but because there are more than 400,000 trusts across Australia – particularly in the small to medium-sized enterprises market segment – any uncertainty that prevails in this area for extended periods of time can have a widespread and damaging impact on the activities of numerous businesses,” Mr El-Ansary said.

Mr El-Ansary said a major overhaul of the taxation of trusts is necessary in order to restore confidence and provide certainty to millions of Australian taxpayers, their advisers and the Australian Tax Office.

“The process outlined by the government strikes the right balance between addressing immediate priorities, and preparing for longer-term structural reforms aimed at resolving a number of contentious issues which have arisen as a consequence of the High Court’s decision earlier this year in the Bamford case,” he said.

If you know someone who has a picture of Albert Einstein over their desk or his face on a wall clock, this might just make his or her day, month and year. And maybe that someone is you, so listen up. A historical timepiece has been given back to the world from Longines, a Swiss watchmaker. The gold watch worn by famous scientist, Albert Einstein, went up for auction by Antiqourum in 2008 and has been touring the world in search of its new owner, but at no small cost. With the asking price between $25,000 and $35,000, it’s a rather hefty investment, but who can resist having the timepiece of the man who said time is relative?

Albert Einstein received the 14 carat gold watch with a leather band by Rabbi Edgar Magnin in 1931; the watch has a mate that was given to Einstein’s wife. The two received the matching watches as a gift from the Rabbi while living in Germany. Shortly thereafter the couple made the permanent leap across the pond to the United States fearing capture from the Nazi regime. The
